Watched Memento

04 Mar

While not at the Mardi Gras Parade I was having my head rearranged by the 2000 neo-noir movie Memento directed by Christopher Nolan, starring Guy Pearce. OK, it is obviously brilliantly filmed and Pearce is excellent. But what to make of it? Brilliant? A wank? A con?

I have settled on: BRILLIANT.

That’s it. No spoilers here.

Mardi Gras would have done my head less injury though. 😉

I love Memento – though I’m not sure I’d ever be brave enough to attempt to teach it. Too much head-messing. 🙂

There’s a Seinfeld episode that employs the same technique, “The Betrayal.” It could have been a great episode, but for the terrible writing that was generally characteristic of the show’s final season.

Memento, on the other hand, is fantastic.

Other films that play with audience’s expectations in a similar way, and yet manage not to come across as wanky, include The Usual Suspects and 12 Monkeys.
