Well done, Irfy!

wilcox.jpgThose who really value harmonious solutions to problems our indisputably multicultural society presents — and of course there are problems — will applaud Bosses pick up a few pointers on the business of being a Muslim.

A BUSINESS course will teach bosses how to be sensitive to their Muslim employees, with advice on providing prayer rooms at work, what to do when headscarves clash with uniforms, and whether to serve alcohol at the Christmas party.

The course, run by the anti-terrorism think tank the Australian Homeland Research Centre and taught by the Muslim lawyer Irfan Yusuf, is designed to help employers develop “harmonious workplace arrangements” for Muslim workers…

This is in marked contrast to sentiments expressed by too many on the Denton program last night, and indeed to the sentiments expressed by too many in this country.

    Three Cheers for Irfan – have long been a fan of his blogs.

    A friend of mine was discriminated against because she was a Muslim. Her boss didn’t realise she was a Muslim, and made comments that all Muslims were terrorists. She tried to force my friend to drink alcohol at work functions and said she was “not a team player” because she wouldn’t drink. That year, Eid al-Fitr (the end of Ramadan) fell on the day of the Christmas party, and the boss wouldn’t let my friend take the day off. So my friend (who doesn’t usually wear a veil) wore a traditional veil from her part of the world (beautifully patterned and colourful). What an awesome statement! In the end my friend had to leave that workplace, and I wanted to sue them for discrimination. She wouldn’t hear of it, but now she wishes she’d listened to me!

    I have a Muslim co-worker who has stumbled upon the best way I’ve seen to promote multi-culturalism in the workplace. Once a year he brings in a boatload of traditional food, and shows an interesting slide presentation on a Muslim topic of interest while everyone who chose to participate chows down. Hats off to management for permitting this, of course. The shortest route to people’s heads is still through their stomachs!
