Climate change

Lovely irony, ABC! Running Bolivian Meltdown tonight on Foreign Correspondent and The Great Global Warming Swindle on Thursday… And do visit that link where you will learn from Sir John Houghton, a top meteorologist and former Professor of Atmospheric Physics at Oxford University, why that “controversial” exercise is wrong on just about every scientific point it makes.

Meanwhile, in Bolivia, as we are seeing tonight:

…Global warming has shrunk Bolivia’s Chacaltaya glacier to a sliver of ice, which is forecast to completely disappear within two years.

Glaciologist Edson Ramirez says,“The dramatic melt of this kind of glacier (has occurred) since the 1980s.”

Corcoran asks, “How many years before all the glaciers around La Paz are gone?”

“Around 20 years”, says Ramirez, who estimates water shortages within two years.

Bolivia is losing more than its only ski field. The “tropical glaciers” of the Andes act as giant water reservoirs. For two million people living down the mountain in the cities of La Paz and El Alto, the meltdown spells disaster.

Glaciers provide up to 60% of their drinking water. Hydro-electric plants are reliant on water run-off to generate 80% of the power needs of the big cities.
