I agree with much that Jim Belshaw says…

… while, as regulars will have noticed, we often come at issues in different ways. I do commend his Moral Courage, Fear, Technology and the Decline of the West, a thoughtful piece if ever there was, though I don’t think the title captures the content well enough. I won’t paraphrase Jim at length, but merely say his post expresses concerns about our construction of the concept “terrorism” and the drift in response towards a more authoritarian and intrusive state, with plenty of reference to policies and actions under John Howard. Do read his post.

Jim explains his title further here.

  1. Have no idea why anyone should play up the “fear of terrorists” card, especially in the Australian context. Have much more likelihood of being demolished by a Mack truck .. or anything on the road, actually.

  2. Statistically I am sure that is true, Davo. However, I do no take terrorism lightly either, and neither is Clover Moore, Sydney’s Lord Mayor, or the NSW government, with APEC coming up. Rightly so, I am sorry to say…

Meanwhile, how about this goose, a Republican presidential hopeless? God help us all if he ever gets up…
